Mother/Daughter June 30 day Fitness Challenge

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on May 22, 2012

I am super excited about this: My June Mother/Daughter (or Parent/Child)

This is going to be a great way to teach our kids, grandkids, or any child in our life that fitness has endless possibilities and is fun.  It will also give you an opportunity to teach healthy eating with your child and spend some quality connecting time together.

Here is the DEETS: We start June 1-June 30th. You will commit to working out with your child for 30 min/day for the 30 days.  You will commit to having one healthy meal or snack with your child…at least 10 of which the child creates.  We will also have a private Facebook group for you (you, child or both) to check in daily.  Those who commit and join will receive a calendar via email that will have a place for you to write down your schedule and meals.  Also, you will have some homework in there as well….what…homework..EASY stuff. For example one will be to post a pict of you and your child working out…or a snap shot of the healthy meal/snack you made..that type of home work.

Working out can be anything active – so walking the dog, playing tennis, swimming, riding bikes, roller blading….anything that is active. BUT you have to do it together. So for instance Taylor dances 3 nights a week while I teach at the gym…that doesn’t count…we are not together.  So on those days, we have planed either walking Kala our insane lab/pit or an Ab work out video.  Now on days she doesn’t dance or I teach we will pick something depending on the weather…or hit the gym. Make sense.

The only requirement is this: you must have a home workout program to join…WHY? – one word Weather.  We can’t guarantee good weather so we need to plan for days you can’t ride bikes or take a walk, especially in Seattle.  If you don’t plan ahead…you set yourself up for missing. You can use any DVD you want – one you have at home or borrow, rent, check one out at the library or you can purchase off my website. Doesn’t matter but have something as back up.  ( Click on Fitness and Nutritional Products link for my website.) Taylor has chosen Hip Hop Abs for our back up plan.

At the end of 30 days we see who has completed all 30 days and we will do a drawing for a Gift card…one for parent and one for child. But the rewards will be far beyond that!!!

To join: If we are Facebook friends already post a picture of you and your child and tag me with the caption: We are all in. Mother/Daughter (or whatever you are) June Challenge here we come.  I will then message you back.  If we are not connected on Facebook please friend request me with message….want to join Mother/Daughter Challenge.

Looking forward to an amazing 30 days!!

Dress for Success

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on May 10, 2012

Yeah you have heard that phrase so many times…dress for success.  The business world is full of advice on dressing for success with clean lines, sharp suits and power ties! But that is the business world where you have corporate meetings, high-end clients and prospects to impress as well as get paid to dress to impress.  I just teach a 60 minute fitness class and will get sweaty and stinky after the warm up.  Guess what…………you still need to dress to impress.   Why??? Because that fitness class is your business meeting and you are trying to impress and influence high-end people…the people in your class.

Think of every class you teach as a very important meeting with your clients or prospects.  When you dress with confidence and like you care about how you look….your members notice.  They take note that you have made that 60 minutes an important one, one you care about and are ready for. Coming in all rag-tag, with worn out, outdated or haggard clothes, same old music and looking like you just woke up conveys a feeling like they are an after thought or not important.  When you take time to prepare yourself physically and mentally for each class you are in effect showcasing to your members that you are READY to give them an amazing workout.

Physically – What brand are you trying to place on yourself? Does your fitness clothing choice reflect that? If you want to showcase a confident, successful fitness professional are you dressing like one? Is your hair done? Do you do your make up? Yeah in about 15 minutes sweat will be pouring from every part of your body but still…are you showcasing your best side.  (waterproof make up guys…it works) unfortunately first impressions are taken on how we look, then how we speak so…make it a good one.  Choose clothing that fits properly w/out exposing the goods, is up to date and clean. Does it BRAND you how you want to be branded? Doesn’t have to be $100 pair of pants….not at all.  You can find awesome deals on great fitness clothing online and at stores like Target & Marshall’s.  Again what is the impression you are giving. If you look unprepared physically, members may interpret that to being unprepared all the way around.  Lastly, choose and do you!! Copying exactly another instructor’s style never works.  Pick what you like and add your own flare and style to it.  Create something fun…you will be surprised, members love it and they love “dressing” up for class too!!! Dressing “up” creates an excitement and expectation in your classes that members look forward to.  Yes I do at times wish I could just throw on some old running shorts and baggy T-shirt….but I know that the Group X room is my office and my high-end clients are the members who take my classes.

Another way of being physically prepared is having all the tools you need to have your class a success. Ipod, CD, cords, batteries, yoga mat, towels and lip gloss. (I love lip gloss so that is in every bag I own.)  Do you set the room up ahead of time if possible? Can you have music playing or at least be there to great your “clients” as they come in.  Situations come up, stereos overheat, mics go out and air conditioners shut down….Don’t get frazzled, be prepared and roll with it!!

Mentally – Being prepared mentally is know what you are going to present and how you will present.  Would you wing a presentation with a big corporate prospective client?  NO WAY!!  Same with our classes, remember they are our most important clients.  Know your material, choreography and lesson plan.  Showcase your self as a well planned, thought out and prepared instructor.

Another area to be prepared mentally is to know when to leave it at the door. Yes, we all have garbage, issues and problems.  Not one of us instructors are immune to life’s little landmines…but once we hit the gym’s front door…..GAME FACE!! Mentally prepare yourself to leave it in the car, let it go or at the very least…fake it!!  People have options in the fitness world. There are many gyms to choose from. There are many instructors, classes and machines to choose from.  Make them feel that they made the best choice by putting on your Game Face and leaving it at the door.  Trust me, speaking from experience, it makes you feel better, it’s more professional and your manager will approve!!  =)

Take an honest look at your Brand and your Professional dress factor.  What ways do you love it? What ways can you improve? Who inspires your fitness style? How can you better prepare for you classes? What ways can you share that help you to mentally prepare?  Love to hear from ya!!

No go rock those fitness classes and Dress for Success inside and out!!

Follow your Fitness Career Goals

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on February 20, 2012

Many seek to make fitness a career but find it to be just a side job…or get paid to workout.  Are you stuck in a job you don’t LOVE and really want to venture into a career in fitness.  The key is to diversify.  You can’t teach 30 classes a week….well you could but plan on wearing out soon.  Diversify within the fitness world is key to making a career of it.

First find your passion and run with that first. If you are passionate about a format start teaching that class. Teach with passion and really start branding yourself as to the type of instructor you are.  Add other formats until you find a great mix of formats and schedule.

Next or maybe at the same time….add personal training to the mix. You can place your clients around your class schedule to utilize your time at the gym.  Adding group training sessions or boot camp classes is a great way to mix personal training and being an instructor and the pay usually bumps up too!

Venture into management or leadership roles in the industry.  Group Fitness manager positions are not easy cheesy work….remember you are working with Divas…hey if you are an instructor then you’re a front row Diva and you know it.  If you choose to lead…remember lead vs manage. (We could so spend 100 hours talking about this.)  Build a team and create a tribe that has voice. =)

Set goals to become a Fitness Presenter or Master Trainer.  Every format and fitness organization needs Master Trainers or Presenters to promote and showcase their companies stuff.  What format lights you up…study, follow and watch their trainers. Find out what it takes to join their ranks and start the process.  So many options out there and this type of work is so rewarding.  This can lead to Conference presenting which is just another step in your fitness career.

Other areas are consulting, nutritionist, coaching and more….the sky is the limit………you just have look around.  Take advantage of opportunities as the arise and take chances.  You may apply and not get the position you want…..ok….regroup and go get the skills, training and or education the position requires. Just don’t give up and keep looking at all opportunities.  Move forward always…or you will move backwards.

I have been blessed with opportunities…you win some and you lose.  Things happen for a reason….I really had my heart set on a managing position about 7mth ago.  I was a runner-up in the application process.  Was I upset…heck ya! BUT…after really looking at what the job was, the type of individual the job needed and who got the job….in my heart I knew the choice was the right one. My why for wanting the position was not in line with who I am as a person and what the job entailed. Yeah it stung a bit but what I really wanted came just a few months later.  I am now presenting at SCW MANIA – California.  My true goal!!  I love fitness and have diversified so I am able to make it a career….I teach what I love, I personal train individuals when it fits my schedule, I present at fitness trainings and now National Conferences along with helping non-gym goers with my Beachbody Coaching business.  Love this job!!

Now go out there and seek & find opportunities to better yourself, take the steps needed and reach your goals!!

What fitness goals do you have?

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on January 23, 2012

This time of year many think about goals, resolutions or plans that they have for the new year.  Then just as soon as they set them……they brake them.  Why? Many times we just lack the true desire to push through to reach our goals.  Maybe we need an accountability partner…someone who will keep us on track towards those goals.  Or maybe something like what happened here in WA state..snow & ice storm that shut down cities.  I know some of you who live with 3 feet of snow all winter think we are wimps…well when you live in area that has more hills than flat streets and where snow is then covered with freezing rain that snaps trees in half resulting in power outages to over 250,000 residants…….I don’t feel like a wimp.  The gym I work at has been without power for 5 days…..I am dying to teach my classes but can’t quite yet.  It got me thinking….

To reach your fitness goals you have to make sure you set yourself up for success….not failure. If you really are serious about losing weight, toning up, getting yourself back to being active….then you have to take the steps to make sure you can have SUCCESS!  This may mean cutting out time for yourself…..not letting anything get in the way. It may mean spending money to ensure you have the right nutrition, equipment, programs or a gym membership. It may mean saying no to success killers like sugary sweets, alcohol, or processed foods.

It surprises me how many people want to be fit, feel better or just get more active….but they can’t give up “this” or “that”. As my husband says “then they don’t really want to be fit or feel better”.

I want to help my community to reach their goals of fitness.  Whether you belong to a gym or not…it is my passion and my GOAL to help as many as I can in 2012 with their goals of fitness.  My February fitness challenge is full……Yahoo for those who signed up. I will start one each month with small groups. This isn’t a gimmack but a proven formula for success – Accountability + Proven Programs + Nutrition = SUCCESS!!

No time like NOW!!

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on May 28, 2011

Feels like forever since I said I was back in action with fitnessfunandforyou.com.  Much in my life has been going on and things feel as if they are maybe settling down, notice I said maybe.  Ever feel like you will never get back on track?  I visited my father in China in April, had sick kids from Jan thru till recent and have been working hard in all areas including trying to keep our home.  The key is I guess to keep on doing what you can….even a little step a day toward your dreams and goals keeps the momentum moving in the right direction.  Same being with your fitness program, business venture or family relationships.  Keep moving in the right direction even if it is baby steps.  Even if you trip up, get up and dust yourself off and start again.  The alternative is failure again and that is not an option…..right!!

So that is my tip till next time which won’t be 3 months. Have a wonderful 3 day weekend.

B.

BTW…we got a home loan mod after a year of perserverence, the run around, a detailed letter and the help of a WA Senator….thank you!!

Motivational Tip Monday – Summer is Coming

Posted by fitnessfunandforyou on March 14, 2011

That is right…summer is coming. Now if you live in Seattle you may doubt that with all the rain/snow/sleet & wind we have been having but non-the-less…it is coming. It comes every year and now is the time to start on your fitness goals.

Sit down right now and write out your fitness goals. Use positive language and speak as if it were already what you have. So instead of saying – I want to lose “X” amount of pounds say “I am now “X” pounds and feel healthy and happy”. What ever your goals are write them out and post them somewhere you will see them every day. When you see that goal in front of you…read it, smile and believe it. Most of the road blocks we have is all in our head…yup…the negative Nancy that lives upstairs. Start dismissing negative Nancy and seeing how you want to be.
Next step is to take action towards your goal. Reading & speaking your fitness goal will not suddenly drop pounds off your thighs when you sit and stare at them. Take action towards your goals.
Accountability is a huge help in realizing your goals so grab your fitness accountability partner and set goals, work towards them and see success. (see previous post on accountability)

Summer is coming…..and I can’t wait!!
